Travel Guide - Amalfi Coast

Travel adventures are trips conducted by our staff to get first hand view of great trips. They relate their experiences and to help plan a great trip!

The Amalfi Coast is renowned for its breathtaking scenery, charming villages, and Mediterranean charm. Here are some travel tips to help you make the most of your trip to this stunning region:

1. Planning Your Visit:

  • Best Time to Visit: The best times to visit are during the shoulder seasons—spring (April to June) and fall (September to October). The weather is pleasant, and the crowds are smaller. Summer (July and August) is peak season, with higher prices and crowded attractions.
  • Duration: Spend at least 3-4 days to explore a few towns and enjoy the local attractions. Longer stays allow for a more relaxed experience and exploration of less-visited areas.

2. Getting There:

  • By Car: Renting a car provides flexibility but be prepared for narrow, winding roads and limited parking. Check if your accommodation offers parking or if there are nearby parking facilities.
  • By Train: The nearest major train stations are in Naples and Salerno. From these cities, you can take a bus or ferry to reach the Amalfi Coast.
  • By Ferry: Ferries connect various towns along the coast and offer a scenic way to travel between destinations. They operate from April to October.

3. Getting Around:

  • Local Buses: SITA buses connect major towns along the coast. They are a cost-effective way to travel but can be crowded and may not always run on time.
  • Scooters: Renting a scooter can be a fun way to explore the coastline, but be cautious on busy and narrow roads.
  • Boats: Consider taking boat tours or private boat rentals to explore hidden coves and enjoy the coast from the water.

4. Accommodation:

  • Book Early: The Amalfi Coast is a popular destination, so book your accommodation well in advance to secure the best rates and preferred locations.
  • Location: Choose accommodations based on your itinerary. Positano and Amalfi are popular and well-connected, while Ravello offers stunning views and a more tranquil experience.

5. Dining:

  • Try Local Cuisine: Enjoy regional specialties such as seafood, limoncello, and local pasta dishes like spaghetti alle vongole (with clams). Don’t miss trying the famous Amalfi lemons.
  • Reservations: For popular restaurants, especially during peak season, make reservations in advance to ensure a table.

6. Activities and Attractions:

  • Explore Towns: Visit Positano for its picturesque cliffside views, Amalfi for its historic cathedral and charming streets, and Ravello for its beautiful gardens and panoramic views.
  • Hiking: The Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) offers spectacular hiking opportunities with breathtaking views of the coastline.
  • Beaches: Enjoy the beaches in Positano, Amalfi, and Minori. Beaches can be crowded, so go early to secure a good spot.

7. Weather and Packing:

  • Pack Light and Layered: Light, breathable clothing is ideal for summer, while a light jacket or sweater might be needed in the evenings or during cooler months.
  • Comfortable Shoes: Wear comfortable walking shoes, as the towns have steep and uneven streets.

8. Health and Safety:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water, especially in the summer heat. Carry a reusable water bottle.
  • Sun Protection: Use sunscreen, wear a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the strong Mediterranean sun.

9. Cultural Etiquette:

  • Respect Local Customs: Dress modestly when visiting religious sites and be courteous in interactions with locals.
  • Tipping: Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated. In restaurants, rounding up the bill or leaving a small tip is customary.

10. Shopping:

  • Local Goods: Look for local products such as ceramics, limoncello, and handmade textiles. Each town has its own specialty crafts.
  • Markets: Visit local markets for fresh produce, local delicacies, and unique souvenirs.

11. Respecting the Environment:

  • Sustainable Practices: Follow eco-friendly practices, such as reducing plastic use and respecting wildlife and natural areas.

12. Travel Insurance:

  • Get Insured: Ensure you have travel insurance that covers health, accidents, and theft to protect yourself during your trip.

Enjoy your trip to the Amalfi Coast! It’s a region of unparalleled beauty and charm, offering unforgettable experiences and stunning landscapes.
